City Project Y2
We were given the brief to look at the city, at first i thought "the city! Not going to be the most exiting project" although as i started to collect my primary research it got my interesting, its funny how better it becomes when you know what to look for. I wouldn't usually look at a door or a window like i do now, looking at all the detail, shape and size of it!!
I began my project by collecting primary drawings from Manchester, Liverpool, Salford and i took an independent trip back to Manchester to focus more on doors and windows.
I drew images of what i thought the city was, buildings, doors, windows, people ect..
I decided it would be great to focus my development on doors and windows, including textures from the city that i found interesting!
I looked at the work of Rob Ryan as i wanted to experiment cutting paper away using a scalpel, i recreated one of Rob Ryan's work for my artist research page!
I also looked at the work of Three Red Apples and Claire Coles, i feel these artist were great to look at i adore the techniques and it's something id like to use in my work, however as my work progressed i didn't really use their techniques as much. I worked with Rob Ryan's and Coulson Macleod's techniques in my concertina book and sketchbook work.
I began to focus on doors and windows, adding more depth to it by involving keys, key holes and flower pots. In addition to liking to idea of involving birds into my development, mixing it up a bit to make it more interesting!
I picked up on a lot of quotes and meanings whilst in the city... slogans from billboards, leaflets, posters, flags and benches. I thought it would be a great idea to involve this in my own work.
Development stages in my sketchbook, experimenting using found papers, acrylic paint, quotes, thread, screen prints and cut away techniques. I found these very successful as i first i didn't really think anything of it till i began to play around with it more!!
The beginning of my concertina book, involving samples and drawings i had created from the city!
These are my favourite pages from the concertina book, i feel they were the most successful and have explored using different techniques and imagery.
